Young and ‘not so old’ joining together

Intergenerational Projects

Text Box: More About The Projects
A multi agency approach has been the key to their success. The programmes have received the full support from the local schools; Education Departments, older person’s establishments and the Opera volunteer teams.
(Partnerships and Links)

The pilot schemes have involved
groups that have come from Bootle
High school (13 year old girls and
boys) and from the David Brown Day
Centre, Netherton.

Carol (Senior carer) and Joyce (carer asst) staff of David brown Day Care Centre  - I thought it would be good to meet the older people before hand and also the workers to get to know them more, and what to expect, and to do some research on day care centres. We think it’s a fantastic idea and all young people where well mannered and behaved

Elva (Manager) David Brown Day Care Centre

It’s a really good project, it is important to build stronger relationships between the two age groups and they did, maybe it could be longer next time. The project has changed users expectations and outlook on young people. The support from Sefton OPERA was marvellous.

Tony (Mentor) Bootle High School - I felt interaction was extremely positive and workers and older persons built a good relationship with the young people. They achieved a good level of trust while having fun, which is important. The partnership worked well and the school felt it was a successful project. The age barrier never existed towards the end and the bridge was built. I hope that the project could continue and maybe involve other young people to participate.

Made up that my child took part, she is a caring person who wants to continue in her own time. Bit worried at the beginning whether she would manage, but she has done really well and always talks about it. I am happy for her to take part in further projects. Overall she has gained a lot of respect and grown in confidence.

Felt proud of him and that he was mature enough to be involved; he enjoyed attending and has gained confidence. I didn’t think it would be as good as it has turned out – exceeded my expectations. I think it’s a great personal achievement and for the school.
